East Fife Road Trip

What a day Saturday was, top drawer in every respect. I picked my Dad up from George Street at high noon and we set off on a Road Trip! Dad, being a seafaring fellow, wanted to see the Forth Road Bridge (again, he’d been over the Rail Bridge on Friday) and then head to Fife. So we went to South Queensferry, took some photos from under the bridges and then headed over the water into bandit country! So, 80p lighter, we headed through Inverkeithing, past Dalgety Bay and on to Burntisland. We stopped in Burntisland by the sea to get some fresh air and look about, it seemed like a nice town but we had no time to stop – the rest of the Fife Coastal Path was waiting for us! So it was on up the A921 to Kirkcaldy, then A955 through the Wemyss’s, Methly and Leven to Eelie. If we’d had time then the beach at Eelie would have definitely got it, along with the pub, but we had bigger fish to fry (so to speak). Eventually (due to a massive diversion along some hairy country roads, and some cows crossing) we arrive at our destination – Anstruther.

Actually, the real target was the famous Fish Bar & Restaurant in Anstruther (which reputedly changed hands for over £1 million). People come from far and wide to sample their fish'n'chips, so we were just expecting to get some take out – but as chance would have it there was one table free, the fabled Window Seat! So we sat down and enjoyed some freshly deep fried Pittenweem Haddock (2 per portion).

Afterwards we needed a walk so we wandered out and watched the goings on around the lifeboat house; the lifeboat was out on maneuvers so there was a general buzz about the place. They weren’t on a call-out, just laying the ashes of a local fisherman (a procession which involved all the boats from his fleet, a lovely gesture). It was a fairly rough day and the waves were crashing up and over the sea walls – great to watch. Sadly, it became time to head back to civilization so we took the quick route home to get ready for the restaurant that night...Iggs.
